I, Adam, recently read the book of Joshua. It’s an amazing time in the bible. The Israelites have spent forty years wandering around through the wilderness and then we get to The book of Joshua and it pretty much says get ready, we’re taking the land in three days. Forty years of wandering comes down to three days. I love how immediate it all feels. I have been waiting to move into a new house now since June. The answer we always get when asking about when it will be ready is hopefully 6-8 weeks. We never get a date. No one ever commits to seeing it finished. It’s the not knowing and the waiting that drives me insane. I don’t know about you but I am so impatient. I like fast food, I like every episode of the season available on Netflix and I never ever bother pre-ordering anything. So I loved this book. So far they have been wandering around waiting on the promise and very quickly they move into the land and take what God has promised them. But one thing that stood out to me was verse 8 in Chapter 1.

It says this - “Keep this book of the law always in your lips: meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.

You see, throughout the book God gives Joshua loads of instructions for Israel but right at the start he gives a personal instruction to him. It’s like a side note. He tells him the promise will come, you’ll get the land I’ve talked about and all you have to do is stay close to me. He calls Joshua into a relationship with him and shows him the importance this relationship will have on the calling in his life.

Life as a Christian can often feel difficult. In this world of instant entertainment and endless ways of filling your time, are you taking time aside for God? Maybe we haven’t heard God’s voice in a long time. Can you remember when God spoke a promise over your life but now it feels so long ago? Sometimes we need to get on our knees. Meditate on his word. Speak to him in prayer. Sing songs to him. We need to position ourselves to hear from him and be led by him just as Joshua did.
